Ozick's "The Shawl"

  1. i completely agree with this, but the shawl also kept the baby quiet...which is extremely important because what baby is going to be quiet for hours on end?? this allowed the mother to keep the child for as long as she did. the shawl is what kept the baby alive for so long, when in reality she should have died a long time ago.

  2. I like that you included betrayal in the themes. We mostly see nurture and loving themes but I think it's important to realize that the betrayal of the other daughter did play a big role in Magda's death.

  3. Betrayal was a huge part of Rosa's life in the second part of the story. Rosa blamed Stella for Magda's death, if she wouldn't have taken the shawl Magda would have been alive a bit longer, but she also was never truly living reality. She lived in two worlds where; one where Magda was still living and the other where she had come to terms with her death but never forgave Stella. It was an odd story, but it gave people an understanding of just what pain can do to someone. They get lost in the pain.
